volunteer profile - Dorothy

Dorothy (Dot), who lived life to the fullest every minute of her 99 years, passed away April 19, 2010.

It is with respect that we acknowledge her as the featured volunteer for CCIS. She so freely gave of her teaching expertise to the senior immigrant learners. Her teaching career began in 1930 and she had been teaching/tutoring ever since, whether it was ESL, painting or dancing. The folks that had the good fortune to have her as a tutor remarked on her gentle and thoughtful pushing and guidance in their quest for improving their own English. She often said that she learned as much from her students as they may have learned from her. As a world traveller, she could very easily relate to students who were from other parts of the world and often used this past experience as a "jumping off" point to stimulate conversation. Our senior students never felt inadequate in her presence as she treated them as her equal, sharing stories and experiences of the past, present and possibly the future.

Thank you, Dorothy, for touching and improving the lives of so many over your long and full life.
