volunteer profile - Jim

The volunteer brings another Canadian perspective into the classroom and ensures more personal attention for the students. The volunteer is a special ‘aid’ in our classrooms, appreciated by teachers and learners alike. Jim, a volunteer tutor for three years is one of those special ‘aids’!

A few years ago when Jim encountered some medical challenges he was advised to volunteer because it would get him involved and restore a sense of accomplishment. He was attracted to the YWCA’s English program because of the open mindedness, tolerance for others and healthy interaction that he witnessed on a daily basis. Within a short time of volunteering, he was going home feeling positive because he had helped someone to be less frustrated with learning a new language. Through sharing his ‘Canadian’ experiences and perspective, Jim has given many of his students a better awareness of their host culture.

Now for a few words from Jim:

I have had many rewarding experiences during the last 3 years as a communications tutor but one stands out. At the beginning of one term when I was introduced to each student I began shaking hands with everyone; however, one student refused because of her religion. I listened, then smiled and bowed which really pleased her and after understanding that I wasn’t offended she completely relaxed. As the term progressed I saw how her personality and intelligence made her an eager and gregarious learner. During later terms we often met in the hallways and shared some interesting conversations. This situation taught me that we must be open to cultural differences and never take a conflict personally. In my opinion the true challenge that a volunteer faces is adjusting to the teaching style and personality of a teacher with whom they haven’t worked with before. Fortunately for me, the teachers I’ve assisted have taken the time to communicate what they need and how the volunteer can be the most effective.

A teacher who has had Jim in her class for several terms feels that he conveys the interest and patience that encourages students to trust him. She has seen him bring out the best in many students and feels that he is a great asset to her and the learners. Hats off to Jim!
